The narwhal (Monodon monoceros) is called Tuugaalik in Inuktitut and is famous for the long ivory tusk that spirals counter-clockwise up to 9 feet forward from the head of adults. The whales are listed as a species of Special Concern and 70,000, or three quarters of the entire population, return annually to their favourite locations within Lancaster Sound. This map layer shows narwhal distribution based on traditional Inuit and local knowledge collected by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
