Seal distribution

Seals are called Nattiq in Inuktitut and are an important food source for Inuit communities. There are five different types of seals found in Lancaster Sound - bearded seals, hooded seals, harp seals, ringed seals and harbour seals. All seal species have been designated as Not at Risk as populations have remained stable despite fluctuations in hunting intensity and increases in industrial activity. This map layer shows areas identified by Inuit to have high concentrations of seals.
